A look at Magic and Kobe: The ultimate Laker debate

Before we begin analyzing and comparing Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant for the ultimate Laker debate, I’ve taken into account one simple fact, they’ve dedicated their entire careers to the franchise. Because of this, I won’t be including all-time greats such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, or Shaquille O’Neal in the discussion since they’ve played for other teams as well.

Now on to the debate.

Magic Johnson has been the undisputed king of the Lakers from the moment he wore the jersey. As a rookie, his impact was immediate, leading the Lakers to the NBA championship. Over the next decade, Magic’s rivalry with Larry Bird would revive the floundering NBA and restore the respect fans had for the game.

Kobe Bryant, on the other hand, was a prodigy, joining the Lakers straight out of high school. He needed time to hone his skills. When he did reach his peak, he was touted as the next Michael Jordan. And by all accounts, he was. Kobe could shoot just as well and play just as well.

If you’re going to look at Magic’s weakness against Kobe in this debate, it would have to be career stats. Magic’s career was cut short by HIV. Kobe’s career was years longer. However, looking at the averages, Magic had higher averages in assists and rebounds, and his team was arguably more successful than Kobe’s, given that the Lakers towards Kobe’s end no longer could make it to the playoffs.

What do you think?

Hey there, Daniel Purjes here. I was born and raised in the Big Apple and later followed my parents to San Diego where I’ve lived ever since. I’m currently in college, taking up sports management. In my spare time, I follow college sports developments and baseball and play fantasy sports. Check out this blog for more on the stuff I love.
